EXERCISES [TUTORIAL/PRACTICAL]

This week's exercise involves recolouring a monochromatic photo to look as realistic as possible. We started out with an old man using just base colours, followed by a woman using base/shadow/highlight colours extracted from two different photos and finally, a photo of our choice taken from a folder provided by Mr. Fauzi.

EXERCISE 1 [OLD MAN]

Exercise 1 is to familiarise ourselves with the quick selection tool and its various functions including the refine edge brush. It was difficult for me at first as I did not understand how the brush worked but eventually with help, I managed to successfully colour the photo.

EXERCISE 2 [WOMAN]

The second exercise was similar to the first but with the addition of shadows and highlights picked from different colours. This helps with colour coordination as well as figuring out how shadow/highlights work on different surfaces to give depth. I also experimented on different blend modes for the skin as I thought she looked to ashy at first.

EXERCISE 3 [CAMERON BOYCE]

Using what was learned in the previous two exercises, we had to recolour one out of 20 given monochromatic photos. I decided to recolour Cameron Boyce's photo since he was one of the only figures I recognised. I decided to give him a warmer colour palette as it better suits him.

REFLECTION

Now, I know how people made those old photos look new! It was also a surprise to see Cameron Boyce in the folder of options to recolour, it was pleasant.
