INSTRUCTIONS

PROJECT 2

Exercise 3: Kinetic Typography

Full Progression Sheet:

For Exercise 3, we were required to work in groups and create a lyric music video of any song of our choice. For my group, we suggested a variety of songs but ultimately settled on Paranoia by Heartsteel

Firstly, we divided the work based on different parts of the song. Each part consists of four to five lines and I was tasked with making the first half of the chorus and the first half of the final chorus. Additionally, I also helped in making the transitions going from one part to another alongside two other members, Emily and Jia Xuan.

Once we got our respective parts, it was time to make the storyboard. Since my main part was the chorus, I thought of adding more action and character, specifically Ezreal.

We were given time to finish the storyboard before having a meeting together to go over everything and determine elements such as font and colour based on the respective characters. The main font we decided to use was Monument Extended.

To make the character, I used Illustrator and separated the different parts such as the head, neck and torso.

Chorus (First Half):

Once the needed illustrations were done, I moved on to After Effects to do the actual video.

Since I had little experience on After Effects in terms of making typography-related videos, I relied on YouTube tutorials as well as Mr. Kannan's demonstrations to get by.

One of the parts I liked about making the chorus was the part where Ezreal's head gets cut off. To create this effect, I had to make a slashing effect and invert the colours to create a sort of impact frame, similar to where Ezreal hit his head.

Here is the finalised chorus, at least for the first half:

Last Chorus (First Half):

Initially, Jia Xuan and I, who were both in charge of the chorus, planned to just reuse the original chorus for the finale but turns out, it was actually a modified version of the original chorus. Thus, I decided to create a somewhat new video while still using some of the previous scenes.

This as well as the next part is where I learned to use the 3D camera to distort the words and add in (a bit of) perspective.

Additional: Verse 1 Part 2

For this part, I volunteered in fixing parts of the animation due to mishaps with the font. Since the dimension and proportions of the fonts were different, changing it to the correct font (Monument Extended) led to the whole composition being messed up with words going out of screen etc. Based on the given storyboard, I fixed what I could while adding elements on certain parts to make it fit with the rest of the video.

Exercise 4: Motion Graphic Chart

For Exercise 4, we were required to create a simple animation based on specific charts given by Mr Kannan using After Effects. I was tasked with using this following donut chart:

Since we were allowed to redesign the charts without touching the actual data, I decided to do a simple approach. Following the tutorial given, I made the chart and added a fade in effect on the size of the chart.

Final Result:

Exercise 5: Vector Animation

For Exercise 5, we were assigned vector graphics to animate on After Effects. Mr. Kannan gave a demonstration for us to follow where he showed us how to change and animate elements such as position and opacity as well as how the puppet tool works.

Here is the vector given for me to animate:

To start, I wanted the circles on top to slowly spin back and forth like a pendulum. To execute that I had to edit on Illustrator and export it as a separate file. Additionally, I also separated every element I wanted to animate onto their own layers.

Once all the layers were separated, I moved on to After Effects. Halfway through making, I wanted to animate more elements but rather than going back to Illustrator, I instead duplicated the needed layer and used masking.

Final Result:

FEEDBACK

No feedback given except for Kinetic Typography. Mr. Kannan found the chorus and end chorus part cool :)

REFLECTION

Experience: Overall, a really interesting experience! I really enjoyed making the music video even if it had me staying up late fixing certain issues but I'm generally satisfied with the outcome, just that I wish my part would've been exported with brighter colours because they did seem quite dull compared to everything else :') As for the other two exercises, they showed me how those animators and editors do their work and how to keep track of multiple layers (hopefully) without getting lost. These exercises really showed me the power of naming my layers haha.

Observation: Since we were divided into four different groups, it was fun seeing the progression of my friends who were in their own groups. Especially with the different songs we chose, seeing how the beat, lyrics and rhythm affected the outcome was very fun and I liked how contrasting each of our works were.

Findings: The kinetic typography assignment gave me a chance to look up how to do different effects on After Effects, which were interesting, especially how to do slashes. While looking through them, I found there are many methods on achieving the same result and what might be simple for one person may not be the case for another.
