INFORMATION DESIGN: FINAL PROJECT

FINAL PROJECT
We divided our work according to different phases where I would do the illustrations, storyboard and second half of the video whereas Li Wen would make the animatic, time mapping, first half of the video as well as adding sound effects to the final product.
Making Illustrations
Making the Oven
I put in the necessary keyframes and exported the frames on a transparent background. This had a lot of trial and error where I had to export, both as images and video, multiple times because there would be something unticked or wrongly selected that I would have to look for every time.

FINAL PROJECT
The final project is a continuation of Project 1 but in pairs where we were required to choose one of our works to be developed into a video through After Effects. My partner, Li Wen, and I chose to use my poster for the video, which was a Pitta di Patate.
We divided our work according to different phases where I would do the illustrations, storyboard and second half of the video whereas Li Wen would make the animatic, time mapping, first half of the video as well as adding sound effects to the final product.
Storyboard
I did the storyboard while doing the sketch for project 1 because I had an idea back then. The initial storyboard was brief and not as detailed so Mr. Kannan told me to make it more detailed so it can be understood more easily. The storyboard was done on Clip Studio Paint.
For the animatic, it was done by Li Wen where she imported each frame of the storyboard and did rough in-betweens to make it look smoother.
Making Illustrations
Since the illustrations were small and in raster format, I had to size them up on a separate folder and draw over the pixelated part to make them look clearer. To make the style consistent, I used Clip Studio Paint, although I did try to use Illustrator initially.
Here is a timelapse video of the process:
A part of the video consisted of an oven with the camera panning to show the pie coming out from the top view, as per Mr. Kannan's suggestion. I made the simple model using Blender and separated the door from its main body.
For the design, to make it consistent to the overall artstyle, I made the front and sides on Clip Studio Paint, transferred them to separate planes and used the Shrinkwrap modifier to apply them on the model. I also used the Grease Pencil to make some lineart on the model.
Initially, I was planning to import the model itself into After Effects but unfortunately, the Grease Pencil couldn't be exported as it is a 2D element. After several (failed) tries, I decided to just animate the oven on Blender then importing that video into After Effects.
I put in the necessary keyframes and exported the frames on a transparent background. This had a lot of trial and error where I had to export, both as images and video, multiple times because there would be something unticked or wrongly selected that I would have to look for every time.
After all the frames were successfully exported, I moved them to Photoshop to compile everything before exporting as a video.
I moved on to After Effects to animate the actual video but since I was only in charge of the Assemble and Bake stages, it was relatively simple once I had the oven video ready. For some of the effects, I also had to mask multiple layers at once with the mask not moving, which was done using Track Matte.
Week 6: We showed our storyboard, which he said can be a lot more detailed for clearer readability but other than that, Mr. Kannan said it was good. He did suggest panning the camera before the pie comes out so the viewers would see it from the top view.
Week 7: We showed the animatic and some assets we would use, including my progress on the oven, he said it looks nice but the end part needs to last a little longer (when the food comes out).
Week 8 (Replacement Class): We showed our draft animation and Mr. Kannan only gave feedback on Li Wen's part.
REFLECTION
This assignment was really fun! If I had one complain, however, it would be the deadlines clashing with Eid so it was very rushed for me personally, but then again I can't fully blame the lecturers since it was just unfortunate timing. Regardless, it was a fun and interesting assignment that I got to work with a friend and it helped me experiment with 2D and 3D elements in making an animation :)
