POTENTIAL IDEAS
WEEK 1
For Design Exploration, we are required to make a project regarding a
certain theme and the output can be anything from a campaign to a finished
animation, as long as it can be exhibited later on in October. The document
below is the project brief presented by Ms Anis:
The ideas I had so far were either to tackle issues regarding being queer in a non-accepting country or the topic of derealisation. Additionally, I wanted to experiment in different kinds of medias, in this case being 2D, 2.5D and/or 3D animation (as suggested by Mr. Kannan on the first week). After consulting Ms. Anis, she said it would be better to do derealisation to avoid topic sensitivity.
Derealisation: Derealisation is a dissociative-symptom where a person feels as if they are not in their surroundings. During this, the surroundings may feel dream-like, distant or even distorted, making them seem foggy or two-dimensional. It is often a response towards stress, trauma or anxiety.
Before choosing a final idea to expand on, I tried to figure out references for each idea and what kind of output I plan to have. I chose film inspirations such as Jack Stauber's Opal, Spider-Verse and The Amazing Digital Circus.
These films were either used as concept and/or art style inspiration because all three films dabble in having multiple worlds (usually two) and the characters interacting with one or both.
Idea: A short animation using a combination of 2D and 3D where only the main character is animated in 3D for a significant amount of time whereas its surroundings are animated in 2.5D. The premise of the animation would be the character finding out their surroundings are fake and try to get out by using one of the methods to get out of derealisation (even if it is sown into the plot). An ice cube falls and the character grabs it, the cold shocking them out of derealisation and gradually turning the world 3D.

WEEK 2
Storyboard:
Once the idea got approved with feedback and suggestions (such as adding ice in the beginning as foreshadowing) from both lecturers, I proceeded on to the storyboard. I wanted to play around with parallels so one of the key frames was the character looking back and the camera shifting to the whole set. The first time would be in a Blender set up (2D) whereas the last time would be in the character's bathroom (3D).
WEEK 3
When finishing the storyboard, I found some parts to be dull due to how repetitive they are, which may make the viewers bored. Hence, I changed the perspective of how the scene should play out.
