Task 3: Illustrated Typography Poster
WEEK 7: Instruction
WEEK 8: Quote and Sketch
The first step when approaching this task was finding the quote itself, which I personally struggled on because while it had to be direct and motivational, it also cannot have buzzwords that would have negative connotations; this also includes the word "not" itself. Initially, I gave several quotes taken from literature and song to Mr. Fauzi that were more poetic/indirect, including:
- Forget death and seek life
- If the heavens can be both sacred and dust (maybe so can the rest of us)
- Be like the love that discovered the sin
- Swan upon Leda, occupier upon ancient land
They were expectedly rejected, which made me suggest:
- to live will be an awfully big adventure
- to strive, to seek, to find and not to yield
These were also rejected because of buzzwords (awfully and not yield) that would make the quote negative as told by Mr. Fauzi. Despite my confusion over the definitions, I decided to just remove awfully big from the first quote. While it slightly changed the tone, it still stays true to its original source (Peter Pan).
CHOSEN QUOTE: to live will be an adventure
WEEK 9-10: CREATING POSTER
RESEARCH
REFERENCE:
I started by finding suitable reference with both photography and typography inside that would also go well with what I had in mind.

IDEATION
SKETCH:
Before the quote confirmation, I had roughly sketched a few composition for one of the quotes; forget death and seek life with the theme of personification as shown below.

I came up with new sketches for the approved quote with feedback from Mr. Hafiz to prioritise and update the third sketch as it has better sense of composition compared to the previous two.

Following Mr. Hafiz's advice, I did a more refined sketch of the third composition using Clip Studio Paint.
PROCESS:
PHOTOGRAPHY PROCESS: DPI WEEK 10
Once the Photoshop part was satisfactory, I started to do outline on certain parts of the elements. Some were done using pencil while others were done using the pen tool.

FONT USED: Outfit
For the typography, I decided to start with an emphasised word; Adventure. The idea was to have the word be on the green area with red to contrast the rest of the quote. Instead of simply letting adventure float in three lines, I decided to organise each letter based on ripples on bodies of water. It took several tries before I was satisfied with the placement. This was done using pen tool and shape builder.
As for Live, I decided to use a obvious colour from the green area to give a sort of connection between the two spaces. A lifted effect using the presence of a shadow with bold and all caps somewhat helps emphasise the word.

FINAL OUTCOME
This quote was chosen partially due to its origin (Peter Pan) and how it can give a sense of wonder to people. A common question that came to mind when this quote popped up was “you’re alive, but are you living?” which produces complicated answers. The idea of adventure itself varies from one to another and my interpretation of the word involves more nature. I tried to convey all of these statements, including a nod to its fictional source, by using reflection and imagination.
For the typography, I emphasised on the words LIVE and ADVENTURE. A simpler approach for the first word where it lifts itself from the canvas, as evident by the casted shadow. Adventure, however, was written on the bottom half of the poster to better illustrate and connect the contrasting colours.
As mentioned before, there are several elements that subtly reference back to Peter Pan and fiction itself. This varies from the use of different reflection and the separation to adventure being cut into three sections, which is a common number used in stories as well as real life.
REFLECTION
EXPERIENCE: I have to admit, this assignment tested a lot of my patience and while the end product could definitely be further improved, I am overall satisfied. It had both fun and challenging parts that made the task worthwhile and what surprised me was the collaboration of two different modules. While it made the documentation and feedback slightly more difficult, it was also an interesting experience and the workload is somewhat reduced compared to making two different posters.
OBSERVATION: Due to this assignment starting during independent learning week, a lot of the feedback was given online either through Whatsapp or online consultation. While this made it harder to immediately receive a response, the format of texting helps me refer back to without losing track of the information. Feedback by Mr. Hafiz was also sufficient enough to help me through the typography progress.
FINDINGS: While finding references, I found many different styles and interpretation of the same quote. While it was not the quote I had in mind, it helped me understand different ways of delivering a message, similar to the same story having multiple narratives and perspectives.
