REFLECTION

Experience: Typography is finally over and I can say it is one of my favoured modules in Semester 1. One thing I really liked about this module, aside from the assignments, is how detailed the instructions are to the point where most of the time, you wouldn't need to question the technicalities and little details because that is how specific the instructions are. Although Typography had a corporate feel to me, I still somehow managed to add personal flair to each assignment, adding more elements and further proving that I definitely cannot be considered a minimalist. The assignments can be tedious but experimentation and weirdly enough, doing extra work surely helped me get through with mostly satisfactory results.

Observation: Back during foundation, we were warned that the tutors would not be as present/active in degree. Now that Semester 1 is over, I can say that (so far at least) it is true but fortunately, this is not the case with Typography. Mr. Max is very patient when giving feedback and would take time discussing with each student on their work. Not only that, he would also listen to what the student had in mind for their design and try to work out on how to improve themselves. Overall, he is an attentive tutor who deserves praise for his dedication in his work.

Findings: Initially, Typography was the last thing I expected to learn when taking design as a course but lo and behold, here it is on the first semester. I unexpectedly enjoyed it because of how extensive it is as both a learning module and a research topic. The further reading I have done throughout these different assignments helped broaden my understanding on type and how it is applied in art based on different context clues. With how heavy this module is, I genuinely wonder how advanced typography would be like (in a good way)!
