Title: Shattered Utopia
Artist Name: Gustavo Arteaga
Year: 2017
Size: 1920px x 3408px
Medium: Digital Illustration
Reason for chosen artwork:
I admire the overall composition in terms of how the focus is shown through not only the glass pieces all pointing towards the middle, but also through the circular structures decreasing in size as they fade in the background. The contrasting colours of warm and cool tones based on the shards' placement really makes the drawing pop while also giving context clues to the character's story. The clever use of decreasing colour contrast from foreground to background also adds more depth. Aside from the design principles present, I like the mix of fantasy and adventure theme of this artwork as seen from the elements in background and the ragged look of the character.

Medium: Digital Illustration
Reason for chosen artwork:
Character art has piqued my interest and Shattered Utopia was
coincidentally made in 2017, which was also around the time I
started doing digital art. I like how people are able to
interpret their own story involving characters and even
different worlds into an artwork that depicts the essence of
that creativity, which is essentially what is done with this
artwork.
Design Principles:
- Principle of Closure
- structures in the background can be seen as complete circles despite being incomplete
- Principle of Figure Ground
- clear element placement for foreground, middle ground and background
- elements on foreground creates framing
- character placed on middle ground
- colour contrast between background seen without glass (warm) and through the glass (cool)
- higher contrast when object is near the viewer, decreasing as it fades in the background
- leads the eye in to the focus through the overall direction of broken/cracked/shattered glass and decreasing size of circular structures
- glass pieces and hand position puts more focus on focal point

Observation:
Shattered Utopia is drawn in a vertical/portrait canvas. The main character has his hand raised with pieces of glass pointing at its general
direction. In the background, I noticed there is a clear cut between warm and cool tones using the glass area. Outside of the glass area, the
main colours seen range from orange to a warm purple whereas inside the glass, several tones of blues and some green are seen. I also observed the elements drawn are also
a mixture of both nature and manmade. The artwork looks detailed when seen from afar but
the strokes are easier to understand and interpret when
I zoomed in. This artwork also has a mixture of both
lined and lineless art, depending on the element.

Analysis:
Analysis:
The artwork has good use of design principles to
create a composition that illustrates part of a
story. Its use of contrast in not only hue but also value directs the viewer to the top left section where
the curved structure followed by leading lines from the
glass pieces would lead the eyes to the actual
focus/focal point (emphasis), which is the character. The character, who is in a
pose that helps emphasise the artwork's focus, is drawn
as a partial silhouette. This further puts a more dramatic effect on the artwork as the background and character
have a stark contrast with each other in terms of colour variety. This artwork creates a framing by using the elements of the surroundings, rather than having an actual rectangular frame. The
composition of the artwork has good depth by
having clear division of foreground, middle-ground and
background (Gestalt theory – Principle of
Figure-Ground).

Based on the composition of the overall artwork as well
as the elements themselves, I interpret the drawing to
depict an adventure-like scene. This is supported by the artist himself whose other drawings consist of similar themes. From the pose of the character followed by the dramatic colour difference, he seems to have made a discovery, most likely discovering either a hidden place/reality or he finally reached his destination. However, given the title Shattered Utopia, I theorise that the place initially seen as near perfect, was in shambles when the character finally came across it.

This artwork serves as an "expansion" and exploration of the original artwork that focuses more on
the environment rather than the person. Initially, there was supposed to be apparitions of
the character going to the final spot to show their
journey but I ultimately settled for depicting it
through the many structures of the earth. A few elements from the original artwork was also implemented in the final result,
primarily the glass shards/pieces and the use of slight chromatic aberration.
This artwork focuses on both contrast and emphasis using colours as well as surrounding elements. The use of red and green to give contrast also
helps separate the foreground, middle ground and background (Gestalt
Theory: Principle of Figure-Ground) in order to give depth to the drawing. Emphasis, however, is more
amplified through the surrounding glass shards
all pointing towards a singular point with a variety of sizes to avoid dullness. Monotony in the artwork was
also avoided by adjusting not only the value but also its hue when applying colours to the shadows and
highlights using gradient map.
Additionally, another design principle present in the
final artwork is balance and harmony. Balance is present by the middle gap that shows
an almost equal distribution of elements on either side that, while not perfectly
symmetrical, still achieves the desired principle.
Harmony, on the other hand, is achieved by
using similar shapes despite being different
elements, such as the glass and the ground. It also shows
that while they are both different elements, they
still maintain a connection with each other.

REFLECTION
What have I learnt in this module?
I had a more in-depth understanding of design
principles and how to apply them to my artworks from
multiple angles, in both a straightforward and subtle
way. Moreover, I learnt the process of doing
observation, analysis and interpretation of an
artwork, which based on other students' work, can be
applied to any drawing field, whether it is abstract
or hyper-realism.
What did I enjoy the most?
The assignments were definitely enjoyable and the
consultations held by Mr. Vinod were precise and very
helpful in going further with these tasks. I really
appreciate the effort given by Mr. Vinod to attend to
each and every student while still giving enough time
fairly to everyone for a more beneficial feedback.
Moreover, the Google sheet he provided for us to input
weekly feedback is also helpful in terms of keeping
track with the work.
What did I not enjoy the most?
The timing of it all, especially the third task gave
me a slightly hard time, but it is mostly due to the
multiple deadlines for final projects, which is
normal. I will admit, however, I can definitely
improve more on the final artwork had I timed myself
better.
What have I learnt about myself through this module?
In this module, I learnt that there are times where I
would bite off more than I can chew in terms of taking
on extra work. Moreover, I learnt that I have a slight
perfectionist mindset where I am tempted to redo
whatever I was doing if I find a part to be
unsatisfactory, even when the deadline is very
near.
What has changed and what has not in my learning journey?
What changed is the reliance and surety on myself and
my skills, especially in modules like Design Principle
where one tutor has their own way of teaching their
students, which might not align with another. Based on
the consultations and seeing how Mr. Vinod consults
different students, I realised that each student has
their own way of doing things and when done correctly,
the tutor would apply knowledge and change it to
benefit that specific student, rather than giving the
same piece to everyone.
What are my aspirations?
My aspiration is to improve more on my drawing skills
and go into detailed illustration work. Moreover, I
want to learn more on the fundamentals and "rules" of
art before breaking them instead of merely relying on
them looking "pretty".
